Bach: Trio Sonata in G Major, BWV 1038

Beethoven: String Trio in E-flat major, op. 3

This string trio is among the earliest of Beethoven’s chamber music. Despite this, his skill for invention is clear throughout. The piece shares some similarities with Mozart’s infamous Serenade for String Trio

Although the authorship of the Bach Trio Sonata is unclear, this very fact inspired us to play it in the concert. It is possible that Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach composed the piece or revised it. Originally scored for flute, violin and continuo, today we play the piece arranged for viola, violin and viola da gamba.
