RAM: Bach in Leipzig with John Butt

  • Royal Academy of Music Marylebone Road London, England, NW1 5HT United Kingdom (map)

Characteristic woodwind sonorities of the Baroque link the three cantatas performed in this concert. The sound of wind and brass dominates the opening chorus of Es ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe, where the singers are unusually shadowed by trombones. Herr, wie du willt, so schick’s mit mir exhibits a scaled-down version of this sonority, featuring a horn and a pair of oboes. Two oboes d’amore characterise Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz. These instruments produce a particularly plangent and poignant tone, eminently suitable for the lamenting opening movement. This concert includes students from The Juilliard School.
